Review: Gatineau Paris Age Benefit Youth Revitalising Oil Serum

The opening of a brand new serum is seriously exciting. I mean it! It's like, when you open a box of chocolates, and they are all sitting nestled in their little paper cups, glistening in the light. Or, for the ephemerists among us, it's akin to ripping open a pack of brightly coloured post-it notes, with their sticky strips ready to be stuck onto a smooth surface. That's how I feel about a new serum - a chance to introduce a new active ingredient into your life that can maybe change your skin. Don't we all love a good bit of hope?

You might be a little more excited when you find out that Gatineau was created in Paris about 90 years ago by a beauty therapist, Madame Jeanne Gatineau. This is a skincare line that combines biotechnology with natural ingredients to give results that last - or at least, that's what they say. Having tried just the one formulation, is this an accurate assessment of the brand? If the fact that I have just the tiniest amount left in the bottle is anything to go by, well, then I'm guessing you know how I feel about it!

This oil serum is interesting, because it is both an oil and a serum, and it arrives as a biphasic suspension that you have to shake up prior to using it. It combines the anti-ageing goodness of a serum with the comfort of an oil, promoting cell turnover while reducing the appearance of wrinkles, and helping with improving skin tone, all while also nourishing the skin. It looks to achieve these positive results with a number of gorgeous ingredients, such as meadowfoam seed oil, camellia seed oil, niacinamide, chestnut seed extract and xanthan gum, among other things.

It also includes several other ingredients that I don't recognise, and have never heard of before, such as rosa canina fruit oil, albizia julibrissin bark extract, angelica acutiloba root extract and opuntia ficus-indica flower extract. It's always interesting to see things I've never encountered, and get to actually feel the way they perform. This comes in a dropper bottle, and you can tell from the get go that it comes separated into two layers. A quick shake of it remedies that, and all you need is about 3 drops to cover the skin. It has a light and not at all oily texture to it, and the absorption time is a breeze.

This is a really comfortable serum to use, and my skin seems to be happier for it. It's made a subtle, but palpable (quite literally) difference, and above all, I feel like it has made the biggest difference with the skin tone. The Gatineau Age Benefit Youth Revitalising Oil Serum retails for a cool $159 for 30 ml of product, which is quite a hefty sum, but I feel like the results speak for themselves, and if you're keen to try this for yourself, you can find it on the TVSN website over here. Have you tried anything from Gatineau before, and if so, what did you think?
